The Clothes Horse (of course)

This month we were lucky enough to not only work with Rebecca from The Clothes Horse, but to have her wear our very own S10-217 Nautical Clutch and the Laura! She has been blogging for the past three years, and in that time has moved her way to the front of the fashion pack. Whether creating stop motion animation shorts of her labbit Nala, traveling the globe, or hanging around NY for fashion week, Rebecca manages to infuse the world around her with her quirky/forward sense of style, vintage sensibilities, and all around adorableness. Read on for part one of our BOTM interview with her and details on how you can win her style!

1. How would you describe yourself and what you do?

I’m shy, creative, and opinionated. Since graduating from college last year I have been working as a fashion blogger and doing freelance. My blog is my biggest job and for that I do a lot of writing and photography. I’ve also worked freelance as a writer and I’ve had a few illustrations and photographs commissioned as well.

2. What is your take on the ever increasing importance placed on bloggers in the fashion world?

I think the increased importance of bloggers is really a reflection of a trend in the fashion world, namely the democratization of fashion. Fashion is becoming much more bottom-up; the streets are inspiring designers and consumers are basically telling brands what they want to wear. Blogs are one of the mediums between the two; broadcasting the opinions of “the bottom” (as it were) to “the top” of the fashion food chain. Blogs also move faster than magazines or other traditional forms of media can. If an event happens in the fashion world it’s on twitter within minutes and a blog post can be informing people of the news weeks before the next magazine is out.

3. What inspires your style?

My style is constantly changing because I’m inspired by everything. My surroundings (especially the colors) tends to have a huge affect on my wardrobe and I also find constant inspiration online on different blogs. I’m really inspired by other bloggers, because they’re self-styled and often self-photographed; there isn’t a team of stylists, make-up artists, or assistants making them look great, yet they’re often as stunning as any editorial in a magazine.

4. What criteria do you use when selecting which outfits you will photograph?

I don’t really believe in picking and choosing certain outfits to capture and I try to post 6 outfits a week—so there isn’t much space to be picky anyway! The personal style element of my blog is supposed to be a snapshot of my world; the outfits are what I’m wearing, not just what I’m wearing on special occasions.

5. What era of fashion is most influential to you personally?

I love the silhouettes from the 1960s, but if any era really influences me it is the current one. Today’s designers inspire me, but I’m really enamored with this generation’s willingness to mix different eras and wear their own unique style.

6. If you could raid anyone's closet living or dead who would it be and why?

Anna Dello Russo, she wears things straight from the runway and never seems to repeat items. I think her wardrobe would be endless and full of really fantastical items that appeal to my imagination.

7. What music are you currently listening to?

Mumford and Sons, Florence and The Machine, France Gall, and some Dean Martin.

8. What trends are you looking forward to this season?

I enjoy trends that I think I’ll like enough to wear even once this season is over. So, this season the ladylike, even boxy bags, velvet, plum lipstick, and capes (I already have 3 capes I wore last fall!).

9. What are your favorite things about the Melie Bianco bags you chose and what caused you to gravitate towards them in the first place?

I enjoy the details that go into a Melia Bianco bag; the bags aren’t boring, but they also aren’t overdone. The purses also look “of the moment” but aren’t actual rip-offs of other name bags.

10. Any advice for aspiring bloggers?

Blog about what you love and generate original content. People can tell when it’s not your passion and they really respond to bloggers who put a lot of time, effort, and love into their work. Also, generate as much of your own content as possible: take your own pictures, find your own stories to share, etc. You are what makes your blog different.

11. Where do you see yourself ten years from now? Will you still be blogging?

I don’t know where I will be one year from now, so I can’t predict ten years and I do not know if I will still be blogging. My blog has changed a lot in the three years I have blogged; if I’m still blogging in ten years the blog will have adapted and evolved to fit whatever position I’m in.

12. When building an outfit do you start with the accessories or the clothing?

It depends on the morning. I always start with one piece and build the outfit from there; that piece could be a dress or it could be a bag.

13. What is your favorite piece of clothing and why?

At the moment it is a Triptych dress I found. It’s a classic shape that suits my figure, but the little black dress has a growling tiger print on the front, so it’s very unique.

14. You have received a lot of recognition lately on the internet and in the press, what effect has this had on your posts?

I don’t know how much recognition I have gotten; so I guess it doesn’t affect me too much since I don’t feel that I’ve gotten at lot! The amount of readers I have does put some pressure on me to maintain my post quality and regularity. Ultimately, every mention, or generous e-mail I receive from a reader just pushes me to not disappoint any new or old readers.

15. When do you first remember being aware of fashion?

If it is fashion with a capital F then high school; that’s the first time I looked at a fashion magazine and saw runway collections. However, I think fashion as style has been around since I was very little. My mother would sew dresses for me and I was allowed to pick out the pattern and fabric.

Wow, what a great giveaway! I would have the S10-217 with me when I go to my sister's wedding at early December (my sister and my future brother-in-law) were both born on this month!

Great bag! I see why its your favorite! Melie Bianco bags are always the best accessory to any ensemble. I would wear this with a bold colored dress out on the town. But I would also rock it with a slouchy shirt, jeans and blk boots as a normal everyday bag :) ..... saucsi@gmail.com
